Things neurotypicals need to know about autism

Wendela lists a few important qualities that she wants neurotypical people to be mindful of when it comes to the people in their lives who are autistic:

  • If they are startled or frightened by something, it can take a long time for their system to return to a neutral state
  • Sudden changes in plans can make them feel very anxious or unsettled
  • Their facial expressions don’t often match their mood, so don’t try to read into their expressions more than what they say

Their face may have nothing to do with what they’re feeling or what they’re saying, and they’re so often misunderstood. People will say, “Well, I know you’re really mad at me,” and [the autistic person] will say, “I’m not mad at you … Listen to my words.” (Wendela Whitcomb Marsh)

Launching the Amplifying Autism Podcast

While Wendela recognizes and supports the idea that autistic people themselves should lead the conversation, she, with her expertise and lived experience, wants to add more spotlight to what she’s passionate about: autism.

In this way, her new Amplifying Autism Podcast manifested: a podcast where she interviews and discusses autism with other autistic people, amplifying and sharing their experience of the world and how the world in turn can better care for them.

I realized that if I had a podcast where I interviewed autistic authors, podcasters, CEOs, speakers … That would be a chance to elevate them and get their voices heard! And that seemed like a better idea to me than to have a podcast for me. (Wendela Whitcomb Marsh)

Wendy’s advice to private practitioners

Pursue your passions! If you have something at the back of your mind that keeps pulling at your attention, give it. It may be a fresh new avenue for you to explore, and set you on a new path that you had never imagined.

If you have an idea, go for it! You’re never too old to pivot and pivot again, and if you’re going to retire, fine, but don’t be serious about retiring. Do something new. You can always retire from that if you don’t like it, but you’re never too old [to keep trying new things]! (Wendela Whitcomb Marsh)
