Building Great Lakes Online Counseling: Google Ad Setup and SEO | POP 1405

What are the core aspects of successful SEO for a new practice? How can you combine Google Ads with your social media and marketing strategies? When should you hire therapists in your new private practice?

In this podcast episode, Joe Sanok gives an update on Building Great Lakes Online Counseling, including the Google Ads setup and SEO.

Podcast Sponsor: Valant

A photo of Valant EHR is captured. Valant is a cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) and practice management platform built specifically for behavioral health providers—primarily therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health group practices. Valant sponsors the Practice of the Practice, a therapist podcast.

Something I hear over and over again from practice owners in this community: “The one class I was never taught in graduate school was how to run my business.”

And honestly? That’s not a personal failing; that’s a gap in how we train clinicians. You built something real. But nobody handed you the playbook for intake, billing, team management, or what it actually takes to scale past a handful of clinicians.

That’s what Valant is built for.

Valant is the EHR designed exclusively for behavioral health group practices. With two decades of experience, 13 million patients engaging in their EMR and 28,000 providers using their platform, Valant offers the tools that close the gaps in your documentation, billing, and operations — including AI that handles the admin work so your team can stay focused on patients.

Valant created a free interactive resource specifically for group practice owners like you. It’s called the Breaking Through the Growth Ceiling  and in literally five minutes, it pinpoints your biggest bottleneck right now, with a 90-day playbook to fix it.

Setting up Google Ads

Joe has been working on the side with Mike from FullyBookedPros, which works well with SessionSites. Altogether, they do a great job of coordinating Google Ads with practice websites. You can find out more here on how to work with FullyBookedPros!

In terms of social media, I am trying to post twice a week … I’m also doing extensive research in terms of paid ads and boosting the ads on social media. (Jen)

Jen and Joe are working together on how to unify the following into their marketing strategies:

  • Google ads
  • Social media content
  • Blog posts

A quick SEO rundown

Your SEO, or search engine optimization, is based on the keywords you use in your content that match the search terms your ideal clients put into search engines to find services like yours.

To improve your SEO ranking, you’d ideally want to use the same keywords your ideal clients use, helping them find you and book with your private practice.

It will find in your blog posts, in your articles … Even in your newsletters and the specific headings that you use, that also triggers [your SEO], so make sure you are using the right headers in your blogs and newsletters. (Jen)

Keywords also matter in the text, especially the meta description, which is the short paragraph or few sentences underneath a heading.

Incorporating psychedelic-assisted therapy

Joe is brainstorming the possibility of training up to five of Great Lakes Online Counseling’s therapists to offer ketamine-assisted psychotherapy. Previously, Joe has already worked with Journey Clinical, a practice that specializes in federally-secure psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy that also offers training.

We’d be doing it all legally, all under FDA-approval … Because a lot of psychedelic medicine is still underground, and this is above ground. This is FDA-approved, and fully legal, and we want to make sure we’re doing that. (Joe Sanok)

If you want to learn more and explore psychedelic-assisted therapy, check out one of our previous podcast episodes with researcher Jason Luoma.

Upcoming tasks

For the next few weeks, Jen and Joe are going to brainstorm:

  • Incorporating psychedelic-assisted therapy
  • Joining Joe’s Calendly profiles
  • Hiring another therapist outside of Rachel’s specialties
  • Get credentials figured out to credential more therapists
