Building Great Lakes Online Counseling: Google Ad Setup and SEO with Mike Zoladkowski | POP 1408

Are you targeting the right Google keywords? Could location-based keywords outperform “online therapy” and virtual ones? Is your website helping Google find your practice?

In this podcast episode, Joe Sanok discusses setting up Google Ads and SEO with Mike Zoladkowski and Jen to build Great Lakes Online Counseling.

Podcast Sponsor: Valant

A photo of Valant EHR is captured. Valant is a cloud-based electronic health record (EHR) and practice management platform built specifically for behavioral health providers—primarily therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental health group practices. Valant sponsors the Practice of the Practice, a therapist podcast.

Something I hear over and over again from practice owners in this community: “The one class I was never taught in graduate school was how to run my business.”

And honestly? That’s not a personal failing; that’s a gap in how we train clinicians. You built something real. But nobody handed you the playbook for intake, billing, team management, or what it actually takes to scale past a handful of clinicians.

That’s what Valant is built for.

Valant is the EHR designed exclusively for behavioral health group practices. With two decades of experience, 13 million patients engaging in their EMR and 28,000 providers using their platform, Valant offers the tools that close the gaps in your documentation, billing, and operations — including AI that handles the admin work so your team can stay focused on patients.

Valant created a free interactive resource specifically for group practice owners like you. It’s called the Breaking Through the Growth Ceiling  and in literally five minutes, it pinpoints your biggest bottleneck right now, with a 90-day playbook to fix it.

What’s the first step?

The first question Mike asks Joe is what the goal is when using Google Ads and paid clicks in their advertising strategy.

(Also, if you want to work with Mike and his team, you can move to the top of the line; click through this link to secure your spot!)

There are a few options for Joe to consider:

1 – Target general popular keywords

2 – Target keywords for the various Great Lakes Online Counseling service pages

3 – Modality-based ads relating to what you offer in the practice

4 – Population-based ads, such as couples, teens, individuals, etc.

I think that’s the best first step before we get into the actual campaign creation, because we need a starting point. (Mike Zoladkowski)

Be careful of keyword success rates

Joe’s goal is to bring in clients who want telehealth, so the ads could focus on keywords that help clients find virtual therapists and practices, like Great Lakes Online Counseling. However, Mike cautions Joe.

Mike explains that virtual- and telehealth-based keywords are often more expensive and less effective than location- or population-based keywords.

In general, I would steer clear of the online and virtual keywords for now. The main reason is we tested them a couple of times, and they tend to be way more expensive than location-based ones, or more general [keywords], and not as effective. (Mike Zoladkowski)

Use geographic keywords

Often, clients are just looking for therapy, and often they would still consider virtual as much as in-person if they feel aligned with the therapist and the offerings.

Therefore, Mike recommends that Joe use specific keywords related to location and population, and connect them to the relevant Great Lakes Online Counseling service pages.

I know it sounds a little on-the-nose, I know it sounds a little too much, but Google likes that. Google looks for those location mentions across the page, and they should be both in headings and within paragraphs. (Mike Zoladkowski)

You can mention on the page: “All sessions are virtual”, but link them to a state or a town to have greater success rates with your keywords.
