GPBC25: Balancing the Many Hats of Being a Business Owner with Daniel Arteaga | POP 1275

Why does “eating the cookie” and “slapping the jack” protect your mental energy? What is the path to developing your grit, the most consistent predictor of success? How are you making sure your business takes care of the people inside and outside of it?

In this podcast episode snippet from the 2025 Grow a Group Practice Conference, Daniel Arteaga speaks about balancing the many hats of being a business owner.

Do you want to expand your private pay caseload? Check out Thrizer! Thrizer helps clients better navigate their out-of-network benefits and takes the entire burden of insurance off of them.

That means, no more superbills, no more insurance calls, and the best part, no more long reimbursement waits.

Chances are you are providing a superbill to your clients. Superbills can be extremely overwhelming and challenging for your clients to navigate. Let alone needing to wait months for that reimbursement check.

Thrizer provides automatic claim submissions, manages claims end-to-end, and the best part, allows clients to just pay a copay for your sessions, while Thrizer covers the rest of your rate upfront and waits for reimbursement on your clients’ behalf

This is called Thrizer Pay and is already helping thousands of clients access therapy without needing to be out hundreds of dollars while waiting for reimbursement. It’s the best way to make your services more accessible and increase your private pay caseload, hands down.

Protect your mind’s energy

Daniel explains the radish-cookie experiment done in the 1990s, and how the radish group’s mental energy was depleted faster by having to complete a puzzle and avoid eating the other group’s cookies, whereas the cookie group could just enjoy them.

Your energy is finite. Pick your battles, eat the cookie, and slap the jack! Which begs the question, what are your company’s jack cards? (Daniel Arteaga)

What are the vital, one-shot choices that you can make to get your business to the next level? What are the pivotal points that you can laser-focus in on and make the most of? These are your jack cards.

Tips for navigating the waters of entrepreneurship

1 – Be authentic

2 – Take care of your people

3 – Be bold

4 – Have grit

Why people matter in business as much as they do

CEO hat, the CFO hat, the COO hat – there are many! And in the beginning, you are often wearing them all.

Often, when the business grows, you will need to start delegating these hats to the people in your team, and this means that you need to take care of your people if you want them to take care of the business.

Simon Sinek said, “100% of customers are people, 100% of employees are people, and if you don’t understand people, then you don’t understand business.” I tend to agree with him. (Daniel Arteaga)

Grit is golden

You will need grit throughout your professional and personal life. It is a skill that will serve you well and forever once you cultivate and practice it often. Keep up the good work – literally.

When you need to refuel your grit, remember your “why” – it keeps you going in the right direction and clarifies your actions when you are feeling confused or lost along the way.

Grit outperforms both IQ and talent as predictors of success … Grit keeps you in the game, even though talent might open the doors … Every coaching program is going to tell you, “Don’t quit”, and they’re going to ask you the same thing, “What is your why?” … because your “why” is what’s left when you have burnt the midnight oil. (Daniel Arteaga)
