How might your practice evolve if you built it from who you are, not just what you offer? Why are clarity and depth the keys to standing out in a saturated market? If you were on the other side of your own leadership, would you want to work for you?
In this podcast episode snippet from the GPBC25 series, Jill Williams discusses how to build a thriving practice in a saturated market.

Be clear on who you are
Look inward. Jill recommends spending some time to consider:
- Who you are
- What you believe in
- What you value
- How you show up uniquely
When you want to stand out in a saturated, crowded market, you need to drill down deep into the real, authentic components that make you who you are.
These are what are going to help you separate yourself from the crowd and draw your best-fit, ideal clients to you.
Observe what is around you
What’s going on in the community? What’s unique to your town? What does your potential client population look like? (Jill Williams)
Once you have gone inward and brought forth the core aspects of yourself and your business, observe what is around you. Consider the population of your town, state, or client base in general.
Who are the people that you are going to serve? What do they struggle with? How are you uniquely positioned to help them?
Take note of the surroundings and factor these insights into the work that you do.
What is likely to come next?
While no one can predict the future, it is worth considering, especially when it comes to keeping your business ahead of the curve.
What is likely to come next on the horizon? How are you going to remain relevant? How are you going to keep your practice afloat? What do we have coming up in the future? (Jill Williams)
“Would you want to work for you?”
Reverse the roles: if you were a clinician or a therapist, would you want to work for your own practice? Would you want to have yourself as a boss?
Use this mind-play as a way to brainstorm and think through how you conduct your business – honestly! – so that you can imagine what it is like for the folks around you. See yourself through their eyes.
I really want you to start thinking about it. If you’re in a saturated market, what are you going to do to attract and retain the best clinicians? The best-fit clinicians for your practice? What are you offering and putting out there for them? (Jill Williams)
You can take this perspective shift further:
- Would you want to work for yourself?
- Would you feel comfortable referring clients to yourself?
- If you were a staff member with feedback, would you feel comfortable bringing that information to you, the boss?
Jill’s 3 rules for flourishing
1 – Lead with values
2 – Find your collaborators and build up your support network
3 – Ask for what you need
