How much time should you spend marketing your practice?

Marketing your private practice successfully does not need to break the bank, and neither does it have to take an extreme amount of time.  In fact, a few hours a week will do the trick perfectly.

I probably spend four to six hours a month marketing, and you can even do it in bits and pieces, it doesn’t have to be this super six-month strategy that you have to follow exactly, because the reality is that clients have way more options … How can you stand out, and how can you use other practices to your benefit, and not view them as competition? (Jamie Mills)

Build your network with intention

“Who, what, when, and how” are important when it comes to building out your network.

  • Who: Where are your ideal clients? From whom are they getting information about finding therapists and clinicians?
I want you to think, “Where are my potential clients at? Who are they talking to? Who’s giving them referrals for mental health services?” … You have to think, “Where are my potential clients at?” (Jamie Mills)
  • What: Bring something to build a relationship on, such as different marketing materials for your practice, as well as some chocolates or a coffee. Jamie’s tip: What can you bring that the secretary or admin will see over and over again, keeping you top-of-mind?
My rule of thumb is, “What can I bring that they will see over and over again?” They’re not looking at a business card over and over again. They’re going to be using a pen, notepads … Anything that would be usable that they would see [often]. And you never want to go without a treat! (Jamie Mills)
  • When: Go once a month for three months to meet and maintain your network connections, and then go quarterly to keep up that maintenance.
  • How: Remember to see this potential network with the intention of showing them the value that you can provide them, instead of thinking only about what you may gain yourself.

That intention can be felt, and when someone knows you care about them, too, that counts in your favor.

Make Google happy

Jamie makes a point about launching a Google My Business page.

[Google Business] is one of the top places that clients are looking for a therapist. When that changes, we’ll have to adapt, but this is where we’re at right now in the industry. (Jamie Mills)

These are the methods that you should prioritize in your Google My Business account:

  • Treat Google like a friend that’s getting to know you
  • Be regular in updating your page and adding new information
  • Treat your Google Business account like a social media account, and being active on it boosts your rankings tremendously
I even ask myself Q&As on my business profile, because we wanted to start telehealth referrals … All those keywords are going to add up to help you rank. (Jamie Mills)

How to get Google to like you:  1 – Add new pictures monthly  2 – Add daily or weekly updates  3 – Fill out service and product pages to completion

Quick and easy website tips

If you run your own website, or you work closely with a designer or website manager, these tips could help you:

  • Original images versus stock images? Google prefers original images. Take photos of your office space, the setting, and therapist headshots, etc.
  • Delete “zombie” and old, outdated pages. You can dedicate 20 minutes a week to doing this to stay on top of it
  • Embed your location via Google Maps on your website

If your website is made solely from AI content, it really is working against you. You want to go through and make it sound human and genuine, because Google is going to like that better than fancy therapy-speak from ChatGPT. (Jamie Mills)
