What we need to know about neuroplasticity
The mechanics and connections between the human brain and nervous system are not really taught in-depth to the majority of the population, leading to most people not knowing how interconnected their mind and body truly are.
Humans don’t really think of the brain as a muscle … [that] continues to grow neurons well into your later stages of life. Like any muscle, it should be exercised. (Thoryn Stephens)
When it comes to neuroplasticity, consider the brain like a muscle: it will become stronger in how you exercise and use it.
While you cannot change the genetics you inherited, your gene expression varies, and in a way you can “update” your epigenetics based on your repeated behaviors.
While you still have a genetic predisposition for, let’s say Alzheimer’s, you can’t necessarily cure that disease, but you can help stabilize the impacts of the disease through changes, including microhabits and those types of optimizations. (Thoryn Stephens)
Brain optimization
Some of the classic brain optimization techniques have recently come mainstream, but their positive impact still holds:
- Cold plunging
- Red light therapy
- Taking peptides, or short-chain amino acids
- Being out in nature
- Building and contributing to a close-knit community
- Practicing good sleep hygiene
Be mindful of the bad actors and signing up for expensive supplements.
While supplements can be helpful, they are not the plug-ins that absolve you from taking any direct action. They should support the changes you make and support your actions, so start with improving your daily microhabits.
In some cases it’s about coming back to the roots: spending time in nature, that’s a microhabit that I’m a massive proponent of … A routine, or a protocol; it’s really just the things that you do every day. (Thoryn Stephens)
Thoryn’s advice to private practitioners
Behavior is essential. You can completely switch up your life in health and well-being purely based on the small, incremental behavioral changes that you commit to each day. The small stuff is the big stuff, just with another perspective.
