TaVona explains the “Success-Freedom gap”
The success-freedom gap is basically where we get trapped by our own success, and as I was doing the research for the Practice Vitality Report, what I realized was that there were four different categories of practices, and how practice owners experience running their business … The one that stood out to me the most, I call “The Golden Trap.” (TaVona Denise)
As TaVona explains, the success-freedom gap is where private practices can get stuck in their own success, bottlenecking their growth and income capacity.
One of these gaps is called the “Golden Trap”, and that’s where a business starts to wobble as soon as it doesn’t bring in a certain amount of profit. Essentially, it loses resilience.
We’re on this treadmill, and we can’t get off, because if we get off, the money stops … That’s what I find happens with the Success-Freedom gap, and what people don’t realize is that those of us who are the deliverers of the service, we’re the clinicians and practitioners, we’re using our … information, knowledge and expertise to deliver the service. The problem with that is when people are coming to you for … your ability to get results, [clients] want you … because you are the face of the business, and the face of success. (TaVona Denise)
If the client feels successful because they worked with you, then you will be working all the time to keep clients coming in the door.
The best way to sidestep this is to develop a team and brand that is separate from you and can still generate income for the practice.
Consider your practice’s structure
Here’s the thing about the Success-Freedom gap: you really have to look at the structure of your business and how you’ve set things up, not just how amazing of a clinician you are. (TaVona Denise)
If you stepped away from your practice for two weeks, what would happen? 30 days? These are thought experiments you can utilize to find weak spots in your business structure.
Once you patch them up, hire someone to fill the role, or automate a solution, you are slowly building up a business that can run without you needing to be on the treadmill to keep it going.
How can you make this simpler and more fun?
This is what TaVona wants you to think about: whenever a problem or issue arises in your business, consider: “How can I make this simpler and more fun?”
A business is essentially a collection of small moving parts. If each part is integrated into the other with simplicity and a sense of ease wherever possible, things can run more smoothly.
It doesn’t have to be serious; it can be important and still simple and fun where applicable. This is essential to consider, especially if you are the business owner, because you can create a great business that your staff love being a part of.
You could have stayed an employee, and it could have been a lot easier on you. You could be serious in a job, but if you are the practice owner, I think we have an obligation … to look at the impact we want to have, which includes the lifestyle that we want to have, because when we are well-taken care of, then we can better serve our clients and community. (TaVona Denise)
TaVona’s advice to listeners
Stop running your business and bank balance on vibes! Treat your bank balance like math and the rest like drama, and decrease your anxiety by learning how to predict what is going on and drive what is going right.
Remember, your business stops being a mystery when you look at the numbers.
