What is the difference between coaching and clinical work?

There are many nuances. Many people think that clinical work and therapy only look at the past while coaching only looks at the future, but this is not true.

Therapy is working with medical necessity [like] DSM diagnoses, … and coaching is working with a non-clinical problem, a more situational problem [that] is less severe and not textbook DSM.

Carly Hill

You have to use your clinical hat to discern which type of approach, either coaching or therapy, a person needs based on the scope and severity of their situation.

How to add and offer coaching in your private practice

  • First, get clear on your why. Why do you want to add coaching?

Do you feel limited by your license? Is it location, career options, whom you work with, or the money you could make? Does it resonate more with you, getting clients from A to B and [from] problem to solution?

Carly Hill

There are many potential reasons! But you need to figure out your “why” because that will inform how you approach it within your business.

  • Separate the businesses: create one business for therapy and another business for coaching. File a separate business license and get a coaching contract.
  • Supply a disclaimer about the difference between therapy and coaching.
  • Keep therapy clients to therapy clients, and keep coaching clients as coaching clients. You shouldn’t chop and change between them.

Basing your prices

Setting your one-to-one fee can depend on different factors. Be mindful of comparison bias to avoid getting sucked into feeling like you are under or over-charging.

You know that you do good work, so own it … it has nothing to do with how long you’ve been a therapist, it has nothing to do with you giving back. You can do that in other ways when you can afford it, but [in business] you come first.

Carly Hill

You can ask for what you want. You can set your fee, know your worth, and set boundaries around the value of your time.
