There isn’t only one way to expandÂ
There’s not just one way to grow your practice. There are many models, and all of them [could] come with tradeoffs. (Brandon Shurn)
There is no “right model” for expanding your private practice.Â
There are plenty of ways to grow your business by hiring folks in different capacities; what matters is choosing a model that complements your practice, vision, and mission.Â
Expand into specialties to offer something different
If you have decided on intentionally scaling your practice, one of the ways you can do that is to begin offering specialty services to your client base that’s adjacent to what you already offer.Â
Think about your ideal client avatar:Â
- Where do they live?Â
- How old are they?Â
- What are their main struggles?Â
- Why would they want to come to you?Â
- What changes would they most like to see in their lives?Â
Here’s the other piece, and this is really important when we talk about specialties: I am a Gestalt practitioner … If I’m not trying to replicate me, which I’m not, that means I’m going to expand and allow other people that utilize other modalities or other specialties into the practice, so now I have people that are interested in EMDR. (Brandon Shurn)
What is the goal you are working towards?
Here’s the important question that you need to answer: “What kind of life do I want?”
If you want a life less encumbered by the day-to-day of the business, consider the 1099 contractor employee model.Â
Or, if you enjoy running the full business as a leader, consider the W-2 employee model. Alternatively, you can work with supervisees! There are many ways for you to scale your practice and increase your revenue – it just depends on what you want to do.Â
How big do you want to get? Is it a large team, is it a medium-sized team? How flexible do you want your schedule to be? … It goes back to the kind of life that I want. (Brandon Shurn)
Essentially, the goal is to build a practice that supports your life.Â
Reflective questions to help you choose the right expansion model
1 – What kind of private practice do I really want to run long term?
2 – How involved do I want to be in the day-to-day activities?Â
3 – What level of risk am I comfortable with?
4 – Which model aligns with my personal life goals?Â
