Hiring clinicians and becoming a leader
Once you begin to hire, your role changes, whether you like it or not. You are no longer a clinician; you are a business owner. You are a leader. You are a supervisor, and you’ve got to begin to walk in that. (Brandon Shurn)
As soon as you grow your practice by hiring staff and clinicians, you scale your business, and you change too: you become both a business owner and a leader of the team that runs it.
Therefore, when it comes to hiring, you need to look far beyond credentials and hire people for their values, principles, and mission.
Questions to ask your prospective hires
Here are some of the questions that Brandon himself asks potential hires to see whether he feels they will be a good fit for the team:
1 – What drew you to my practice?
2 – What type or types of clients are you most passionate about working with?
3 – What are some of your long-term goals as a clinician?
4 – What are you hoping to do or learn as a part of my practice?
5 – Tell me about how you approach your clinical work?
6 – What questions do you have for me?
That’s the flow of how I engage people that want to be on board, and what I’m looking for is not the “right answer”; what I’m really looking for is an alignment … with my vision, mission, and values. (Brandon Shurn)
Thinking through who and how to hire
Sometimes a great way to envision and plan how you’d like to set up your practice for potential hires is to consider the following:
- If you were looking for a job as a clinician, what type of practice would you like to join?
Depending on your answer, you will get a direction on which aspects of your practice you need to modify before it becomes more attractive to prospective hires.
Here are some questions to consider:
1 – What kind of team culture do I want to create?
2 – How will I support and retain clinicians?
I’m offering [to my clinicians] mentorship and guidance and access to my brain and the knowledge that I have as a consultant for free, and to everybody that works for my practice, I’m offering supervision free of charge. (Brandon Shurn)
3 – Am I ready to lead instead of just doing clinical work?
4 – What leadership skills do I need to develop?
