I sent an email out to folks on my email list (click here to join or learn about it). I said to them that I wanted to feature them on my website. I thought to myself, I know them, they know me, but y’all don’t know one another!

Today I want to introduce you to Margaret A. Donohue, PhD Psychologist/neuropsychologist MSW. I met her at The Most Awesome Conference. What’s really cool about the conference, is it has given us all a huge network of people that can help us grow! For me, I have all these new people that know about my work and want to be a part of my community. For them, they get all sorts of tips and leads to grow their practice, it’s such a win-win.

What’s something you learned from Practice of the Practice?

I like technology. A lot of my practice revolves around assessment. I use a lot of technology. So the applications for business and clinical practice were useful and the paperwork article was useful.

What is your therapeutic specialty?

I work with chronic, serious, terminal illness, and undiagnosed medical conditions. If someone has seen a physician for the same problem for 6 visits and doesn’t have a diagnosis, that is my ideal client.

What is an action you took to grow your private practice?

I started talking to people more. Finding out what they needed and how I might be a resource for them. So I looked up information and started providing it for free. I’ve done talks, but mainly I just ask how I might be able to help.

Complete this sentence: When I first started a private practice, I…

thought I’d just be working in the back of a physician’s office. I started there. Then I wanted more direct work and more management of my own time. I wanted greater flexibility. So I set my own hours and work with people the way I want.

How have you grown your income and influence?

My income has increased substantially in the past 6 months. More people know me than before. I run into people who know me and students who are familiar with my practice.

What’s next for you?

I’ve been asked by some clinicians to write an ebook on neuropsychology and how non-neuropsychologists can know if a client is showing neurological symptoms.

What is one specific podcast or article that helped you grow quickly?

How to start a private practice in one day.

If every counselor in the world was reading this, what would you want them to know?

I think Practice of the Practice has great useful tips to help people get started. I love ZynnyMe and their business Bootcamp. Both of these together can make your practice a success.

What are 2-3 resources you love? How do you use them to grow your practice?

I like bufferapp.com. It lets me tweet, pushes to Facebook and I can review or add posts. I like right diagnosis.com that allows me to look up symptoms and review them. I’ve also found The psych drugs application helpful.
