Navigating the pace

Joe has officially reached week 20 of building Great Lakes Online Counseling while limiting himself to just two hours of work per week.

I’ve got to tell you, being on week 20, there’s this frustration at the pace. It’s not anything that my team is doing; it’s this restriction I gave myself of two hours a week. I’m just finding it frustrating to not have more time than that! (Joe Sanok)

While the time limit was intentionally designed to fit around Joe’s existing commitments, it has highlighted just how long it can take to build momentum in a new practice.

Even so, meaningful progress has been made. The practice has launched its website, hired its first clinician, and brought on a virtual assistant through Ubuntu Freelancers.

The necessary paperwork that takes time

As the practice owner, Joe is still responsible for approving major decisions and managing important credentialing and compliance tasks.

While these responsibilities can feel tedious, they are often necessary parts of building a strong foundation.

The lived experience of going back into being an owner is that it’s really hard to outsource these things … Now I have to go through all of this paperwork, and it’s an extra $199 a year just to have an employee that’s in California, and to manage all of that. (Joe Sanok)

The reality of starting a practice is that many essential tasks happen behind the scenes and often take longer than expected.

Putting the puzzle pieces together

At this stage, Joe’s focus is on connecting the remaining pieces needed to move the practice forward.

Credentialing, insurance decisions, clinician onboarding, and directory listings all depend on one another. As each piece falls into place, the next step becomes possible.

So there’s just a lot of puzzle pieces that are part of this phase, and I think that’s why it’s important to walk through this phase with you and to talk through how there are so many steps within. (Joe Sanok)

Building a private practice rarely happens through one major breakthrough. More often, success comes from patiently connecting dozens of smaller pieces over time until the larger picture begins to emerge.
