What if your strongest referral partner is already in your community? Is your client experience transformational, or transactional? How could stronger community partnerships improve client care?
In this podcast episode, Joe Sanok discusses working with federally qualified health centers with Jill Steeley, MPH.
Podcast Sponsor: Valant

Something I hear over and over again from practice owners in this community: “The one class I was never taught in graduate school was how to run my business.”
And honestly? That’s not a personal failing; that’s a gap in how we train clinicians. You built something real. But nobody handed you the playbook for intake, billing, team management, or what it actually takes to scale past a handful of clinicians.
That’s what Valant is built for.
Valant is the EHR designed exclusively for behavioral health group practices. With two decades of experience, 13 million patients engaging in their EMR and 28,000 providers using their platform, Valant offers the tools that close the gaps in your documentation, billing, and operations — including AI that handles the admin work so your team can stay focused on patients.
Valant created a free interactive resource specifically for group practice owners like you. It’s called the Breaking Through the Growth Ceiling and in literally five minutes, it pinpoints your biggest bottleneck right now, with a 90-day playbook to fix it.

What is a federally qualified health center?
A federally qualified health center is another term for a community health center. There are 1500 of them across the country … They are privately-owned non-profits for the most part; there are some that are owned by their local government. (Jill Steeley)
The unique aspect of a community health center is that it receives some federal funding to provide comprehensive primary care to those who otherwise wouldn’t have access to healthcare, such as clients who are low-income, underinsured, or uninsured.
Federally qualified or community health centers are highly regulated to receive federal funding.
They are required to provide medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy support, and specialty care.
Transformational care versus transactional care
To support your clients, the first thing you need to do is increase and diversify your revenue stream in a way that serves your community, because great healthcare is profitable while being transformational, not transactional.
How do we attract more insured patients, patients with a payer? How do we serve … everyone in a better way with more transformational healthcare, not transactional healthcare? That’s really what consumers and patients are looking for now. (Jill Steely)
Provide transformational care by:
- Anticipating client needs
- Employing front of desk staff who are trained in hospitality and trauma-informed care
- Staying in contact with clients
- Celebrating milestones in their care journey
How can we, from the minute they contact you to schedule an appointment, look on your website, whatever it might be, how can we start that wrap-around care talking to them, communicating with them in ways that they want to be communicated with, and that depends on their age, income-level, tech-savvyness … And we don’t want to stop communicating with them once they leave that appointment. (Jill Steeley)
How to collaborate with health centers
Treat them like another networking point for you to strike up a relationship with.
Consider visiting health centers and offer the service that you provide to partner with them.
We always say in community health that if we don’t address those social determinants of health, a person can’t get better. That’s their physical health, mental health, their housing needs, their food security, their job, their family; all of those things can be very distracting for a person getting better and being healthier. So, your community health center can help with all of those things! (Jill Steeley)
Federally qualified or community health centers provide essential healthcare to your clients, so consider partnering with them, and see how you can refer clients to them and how they can refer clients to you!
Jill’s advice to private practitioners
Hang in there! We can get in our own way, and so think about, “What is actually bogging me down?” and work it out of your system, because that will help support your own mental health and well-being.
