The benefit and importance of networking

At the Group Practice Conference, there were TEDx-style talks and presentations over various topics pertaining to both the professional and personal lives of therapists, especially practice owners.

While the information shared was invaluable, one of the biggest takeaways and benefits of attending a conference like this is networking.

The other part is the intentionality behind making opportunities to network. So, various points in time throughout the day, there are 20 or 30 minutes were it’s intentional about networking. (Brandon Shurn)

Having an all virtual practice

One of the insightful conversations that Brandon had with a fellow attendee was about how to run a successful virtual practice.

What resonated with him was this fruitful discussion, and hearing a speaker at the conference share what Brandon has also been doing in his practice: being explicit about being a training clinic, and giving autonomy to your clinicians.

Giving that flexibility to them and that autonomy to control their schedule [is great], so hearing this other clinician and practice owner say that, for me, it was refreshing, and confirmation in a sense, like, “Yeah, you were thinking about this in the right way.” (Brandon Shurn)

“How big is big enough in growing a practice?”

Another insightful conversation Brandon shares that he had with other group practice owners is what size is best to grow a group practice to.

What does maturity in a private practice look like? How do people define stability? When is it worth scaling, and when is it better to maintain?

That is very individual … That conversation led me to say in response … “You’ve got to answer that question for yourself, and in order to answer that question for yourself, you need to know your numbers: what income you want to make, how much time freedom do you want?” All of those things [matter]. (Brandon Shurn)

Knowing your numbers is key to helping you make the next-best decision and to help you plot your goals from merely dreams into the reality in which you want to live.
