The start of the podcast
Back in 2009, Joe read Guerilla Marketing in a time when he was trying to figure out how to take his practice to the next level, and what that next step should look like.
Joe knew that he didn’t want to launch another whole website or do something expensive without having an idea of what the payoffs would be, so he kept thinking. He knew that he had to find a niche point to make a successful and memorable impact.
It took him some further years to research and prepare, but he ended up launching the podcast in 2013.
There were no podcasts at the time around the business of running a private practice. Really, those first 100 episodes for me were [just] me interviewing people.
Joe Sanok
Taking the next step
The wonderful thing about the podcast was that it offered an easier way to access people that were way above Joe’s level at that time.
Through the podcast, he was able to chat and interview with famous and skilled professionals, and build great relationships with them.
Joe knew that he didn’t want to stay in a full-time job forever, and started to consider what alternatives he could create for himself, but he knew that it would be difficult.
If I leave this full-time job and I fail, would I rather try and fail or would I rather never know if I have it in me?
Joe Sanok
So, as his world began to change, Joe gave himself another choice: how to move forward.
For me, I knew that I had to try to run a private practice, to do Practice of the Practice, to really dig into different things outside of a full-time job.
Joe Sanok
Even though everyone thought Joe was mad to leave his great full-time job to try out private practice, he knew that he wanted to.
Now, the business is thriving in its stride, and we feel like we’re just getting started!
Overcoming fear and doing it anyway
Even though there are thousands of therapists, there is only one of you. Your personal experience and view of the world add a lens to your approach to therapy that cannot be replicated.
Don’t be afraid of being seen or letting yourself be seen! That authenticity brings success and it lets you step into a platform where your fullest professional potential and lived experience can work in tandem.
The thing is … there are people that will relate to you differently than other influencers, and the idea of there being an impostor or having that feeling of being an impostor [is unneeded] because you know your stuff … even if you’re fresh out of grad school, you know more than most of the world.
Joe Sanok
Don’t stick with the status quo, especially when you have been interested in doing something new, different, and powerful.
